Active Liquid Cooling

When the temperature of the liquid media needs to be cooled below that of the air or liquid being used to cool the system, an active liquid cooler is required. 

A refrigeration circuit delivers the required cooling effect. A refrigerant compressor drives the cooling circuit. Depending on the application requirements, the chiller will contain an air-cooled or water-cooled condenser.

  • In most applications one or more fans drive air over the condenser. The heat removed from the media is then delivered as warm air into the atmosphere. While such a chiller is a completely independent unit that does not require any additional components to function, it will heat up the immediate atmosphere and also generate higher levels of noise from the fans.

  • Where a source of cooling water is available, the heat from the condenser can be discharged to this flow. Typically this can be a centralised water circuit supplying machines or a raw water supply (e.g. ground or river water). If required a closed loop secondary circuit may be introduced to isolate water that is potentially corrosive to the chiller unit. The warm water returned from the chiller can then possibly be used for other purposes, reducing overall energy consumption.  Water-cooled chillers are more silent and do not require maintenance of the air circuit, but require further components for their function.

  • Communication to process by a number of standard protocols - RS-485, Modbus / IO-Link / Ethernet-based
